Study Permit

The study permit is a document that is issued to foreign nationals to allow them to study at any designated learning institution (DLI) of their choice in Canada.

The Validity of a Study Permit

The duration of a student’s study program is used to determine the duration of the study permit which is issued by an immigration officer. This means that the study permit is usually valid for the length of a student`s study program plus an extra 90 days. The 90 days’ interval gives room for the student to either prepare to leave Canada or apply to extend their stay.

Eligibility Requirement

There are two (2) ways to apply for a study permit; Online or via a Visa Application Centre in your home country. It is often advised that a student should apply for a study permit as soon as they have a letter of acceptance from a Canadian college or university. A study permit may take up to 3 months before it is issued depending on the country where the student is applying from.

A prospective student can apply for a study permit in Canada if they have:

Applied to a designated learning institution (DLI)
Provided proof of sufficient funds for
- Living expenses for themselves and any dependants
- Tuition fees

No criminal record, and received a police clearance certificate (if required)
Evidence of medical fitness (if required)
Evidence that they will leave Canada at the end of their study.

Documentation:

Before applying for a study permit, you need:

A letter of acceptance from a designated learning institution (DLI)
A valid passport or travel document
Proof of financial support

You may also need:

A letter of explanation
A certificat d’acceptation du Québec (CAQ)
A custodian declaration (minors only)
Other documents required.

Application

Generally, you must apply for a study permit before you come to Canada. Some people can apply for a study permit from within Canada. In some cases, you can apply when you arrive in Canada at the port of entry. Make sure you understand which option is applicable to you.
